Today, I had the opportunity to attend Coffee with a Deputy, an event I also participated in last year. Once again, it proved to be a meaningful and productive conversation about the safety of our community.

We had thoughtful, in-depth discussions about how we can continue working together to keep our neighborhoods safe. One key topic was the importance of investing in high-quality camera systems. While no single solution can eliminate crime, having reliable and clear camera footage can play a critical role in identifying suspects, deterring criminal activity, and supporting investigations when incidents occur.

Although current statistics show that crime is trending downward, numbers alone do not always reflect how people feel. Many of our most vulnerable residents, particularly seniors, have shared that they still feel unsafe in our city. That feeling matters. Public safety is not only about data. It is also about perception, confidence, and trust.

We also discussed the importance of ongoing outreach and communication between deputies and residents. Building trust requires consistent engagement, transparency, and opportunities for open dialogue like today’s event. When community members feel heard and law enforcement remains visible and accessible, we strengthen the relationships that are essential to lasting public safety.

Events like Coffee with a Deputy remind us that safety is a shared responsibility. By working together, we can continue building a city where everyone feels secure and supported.
